Against All Odds

เขียนโดย Hanamiji

I just watched the movie Seabiscuit for probably the fourth or fifth time and it still just as inspiring as the first time I watched it. A story about a very small horse with a very big heart during the depression years where times were extremely difficult and people were looking for something to believe in. Seabiscuit provided that inspiration and quickly built a huge following. He won race after race and when the "biscuit" ran against War Admiral there were 40 million Americans listening to this match race. The "biscuit" made the little guy feel like he had a chance, a second chance.

I sometimes feel, of late, that we need another "biscuit" as times are tough with the many problems facing us, such, as unemployment, the debt crisis, the constant bickering in the Congress, the "shrinking of our middle class and high cost of medical care.. I am reminded that when watching this spectacular story that we, in the United States, have a great deal to be thankful for. Yes, we may have more problems than we feel we can handle but we are transparent and open. I believe we have the ability to solve these problems and do the right thing.

We will solve our health care dilemma with either single payer or some of form of care which will result in high quality health care and affordable insurance for all Americans. We have made a significant step toward that goal with Obama care. I am also sure we will solve our debt problem and unemployment will begin to drop. Even medical care will improve and costs will slowly come down.

Our country began "against all odds" just like the "biscuit" and we have prevailed ever since. We will not eliminate social security and we will not eliminate medicare. These entitlements will be with us for a long time. We will make cuts and they will be difficult but they will be made within the framework of common sense. All of our citizens require affordable health insurance and quality health care. All of our citizens require a retirement safety net and all of our citizens need to work.

I truly believe that over the next few years we will overcome these problems even when it seems "against all odds." This is not a time to get "down" or passive, it is a time to be positive and engaged. We will prevail, just like the "biscuit" as did all Americans. We need hope and something to believe in and each of us can find it. I do not know if it is reading an inspiring story such as Seabiscuit or taking care of your kids, or volunteering for community service or going to Church but it is time we get inspired and get involved.

We all spend entirely too much time complaining about our everyday lives, about our finances, about our government, about our justice system, about our health insurance programs, about our educational system and just about everything under the sun. Lets stop complaining, lets get off the sidelines and get involved. We have been succeeding "against all odds" for many years and we will continue.
